“The mission of an architect is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for living in, and to give reason, rhyme, and meaning to life. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, 1957
Happy Birthday, Frank Lloyd Wright!
I’m almost positive that it’s likely to be a Trivial Pursuit question; ‘name a famous American architect’ and you can bet that everyone’s first answer will be Frank Lloyd Wright. Today we are celebrating the birth of one of the most regarded, studied, influential architects of the twentieth century! With a career spanning over seventy years, Wright developed his own distinct style of ‘organic architecture’, a new residential model of ‘prairie house’, as well as iconic schemes such as the Guggenheim in New York, and Fallingwater in Pennsylvania.
More than an architect, Wright was a social critic and visionary, just as well known for his personal life as he is for his architectural contributions! Among many things, Wright is well known as the pioneer of reinforced concrete and the widespread use of glass, even when others doubted the safety of his designs. The various stages of Wright’s career can be narrated in tandem with biographical episodes, as exemplified in the book “Lives built, Biographies of architects” by authors Anatxu Zabalbeascoa and Javier Rodríguez Marcos.
Our company founder, Paul Overton, became fascinated by Wright through movies. Wright’s architecture pops up in some of the most famous Hitchcock films! Pauls interest in Wright intensified, as it does with most people, at the sheer craziness of Wrights life and all the goings on both in and out of work! It’s apparent that at times Wright was very much in Vogue, then would have periods whereby he was labelled as old school. With incredible flamboyant style, Wright would make an extraordinary comeback and blow the minds off the industry by producing never seen before masterpieces in both architecture and the art world.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s work has been part of Panik Design’s history for 20years and holds a very special place in our heart. Wright’s designs can be found in our showroom and our website where we include an extensive selection of his legendary Yamagiwa lighting, Acme Studios pens and accessories, cufflinks, and mirrors.
