Vipp 13 Bathroom Pedal Bin
Vipp 13 bathroom pedal bin is made with a layer of stainless steel and equipped with a damper mechanism for smooth closing of the lid as well as a rubber ring that guarantees air-tight closure. The body is manufactured in powder-coated steel and hides the removable, galvanised steel inner bin. A rubber ring at the base ensures that sensitive surfaces are safeguarded.
Vipp’s ambition is a world with fewer but better products. The philosophy present in all Vipp products is taken straight out of the bin – evoking function over form and staying power over fading trends.
Holger Nielsen’s original pedal bin was not designed in the strict traditional sense but got its visual expression in response to a series of functional criteria: A large foot for stability, a domed steel lid on top which is easy to clean, ears on the side of the body so it is easy to move around and a rubber ring at the base for protection the floor. These functional dogmas remain the starting point for all Vipp products.

The Vipp story begins one spring Sunday in 1931 when 17-year-old Holger Nielsen wins a car in a lottery at the local football stadium. Holger loves cars but has no driving licence, and he therefore decides to sell the car and invest in a metal lathe. This marks the beginning of Holger’s metal factory where, a few years later, he creates a product that will become famous around the world: the Vipp pedal bin.
“Good design never goes out of fashion”, Holger used to say. Time has proven him right; the Vipp bin has only been marginally improved since it saw the light of day back in 1939. Today the bin is internationally recognised as a design classic, and in November 2009 it was accepted into the architecture and design collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
Holger and, his wife, Marie’s youngest daughter, Jette Egelund, decides to take over the company. So far, the bin has only been sold to the professional market, but Jette is convinced that it can also be sold to design enthusiasts around the world. Jette visits the finest furniture and design shops in Scandinavia. After much time and determination, The Conran Shop order bins for their London and Paris stores.
Today, Vipp is a third generation family business. Jette has been joined by her two children, Sofie and Kasper, who together with a committed team of employees and a growing range of products continue adding chapters to the Vipp story. The original bin is available in five sizes and has been joined by several new bathroom and kitchen products. The new products are manufactured using the characteristic Vipp materials, steel and rubber, enhancing Vipp’s more than 70-year-old tradition for excellent craftsmanship and durability.
