Suspension luminaire providing diffused lighting. Hemispherical, mechanically-processed cast plaster diffuser, painted white inside. Outer finish: rust, glossy black, glossy white or matte gold. Plaster diffuser support in die-cast aluminium alloy, liquid-painted white. Moulded upper bushing in die-cast, polished aluminium alloy, protected with transparent paint on the entire visible part. Upper cable gland and blocking ring nut in black injection-moulded PC (poly carbonate). Shaped, galvanised adjustment screws. Transparent, injection-moulded, upper and lower silicone shock absorbers. Lamp holder and fixing support in black injection-moulded PPS (polyphenylene sulphide). Flashed and blown opal glass diffuser. Moulded fixing ring nut in die-cast aluminium alloy with alodine plating. Skygarden 1 frieze in photo-etched and mechanically drawn AISI 304 steel. Moulded and galvanised steel ceiling attachment Gray, injection-moulded PA6 (Nylon) rose.

The Designer: Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands, and graduated cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. Marcel Wanders’ fame started with his iconic Knotted Chair, which he produced for Droog Design in 1996. He is now ubiquitous, designing for the biggest European contemporary design manufacturers like B&B Italia, Bisazza, Poliform, Moroso, Flos, Boffi, Cappellini, Droog Design and Moooi of which he is also art director and co-owner. Founded in 2000, Moooi has grown into an internationally renowned design label. Additionally, Marcel Wanders works on architectural and interior design projects and recently turned his attention to consumer home appliances. Marcel was the editor of the International Design Yearbook 2005. In the same year, together with Chef Peter Lute, he established the extraordinary LUTE SUITES hospitality-concept, the first “all over city suites” hotel in the world. He also designed the interior of Blits, a new restaurant in Rotterdam and the interior of the restaurant ‘Thor’ at the Hotel on Rivington in New York including bar, lounge and private club. Marcel is the first and among the most important designers of Droog design. He was a juror for various prizes like the Rotterdam Design Prize (for which his own products were nominated several times) and the Kho Liang Ie prize. He lectured at SFMoMA, Limn, the Design Academy, Nike, IDFA, FutureDesignDays and has taught at various design academies in the Netherlands and abroad.

The Brand: The beginnings of Flos (meaning “flower” in Latin) blossomed from a brilliant idea: to create objects, starting with a light bulb, that would change the way of life for both the Italian market and the foreign markets. Dino Gavina and the small Eisenkeil manufacturing facility in Merano, had already been creating furniture alongside design masters such as Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Afra and Tobia Scarpa. But by the early ‘60s, Gavina became convinced the time had come to create new lamps. Using the same technology – conceived in the USA and tested at Eisenkeil – used for the Cocoon lampthe Castiglioni brothers and the Scarpa duo began creating lamps such as the Taraxacum or the Fantasma, with many other beautiful and surprising lamps to follow.

And so, from day one, Flos was already reinventing the idea of artificial lighting.
