The Kartell Al Wood Smartwood Table is one of a series of revolutionary furniture products designed by Philippe Starck using 'Smart Wood'. This alluring side table - ideal as a sitting room or bedside table - features a concave top mounted on a chromed steel or black base.

What is 'Smart Wood'? Smart Wood is the fusion of one of life's boldest and basic furniture construction materials fused with technological know how. With patented technology a fine layer of wood is worked with a mould, designed to provide curvature of the wooden panel to the edges to create a shape of unprecedented roundness. In this way the beauty of the wood is enhanced - bent horizontally and vertically in three dimensions to create welcoming curves. This practice is part of the 'Kartell Loves The Planet' philosophy - aimed at enhancing good practices for sustainability throughout the production process in the use of raw materials, coupled with low environmental impact. Veneer vs Slatted Ash Smartwood come in two options - Basic Veneer or Slatted Ash. Basic veneer is plywood overlaid in beech whereas slatted ash has a more visible grain due to the stripping and cutting of the trunk. Basic veneer has a more uniform colour due to the homogenous nature of the wood whereas slatted ash is more varied due to the woods grain and veinings, making each product unique.
