Magis Pingy The Wobbling Penguin Chick by Eero Aarnio
“A chair is a chair, is a chair, is a chair … but a seat does not necessarily have to be a chair.”
Eero Aarnio
The shape of the head, cute little beak and the almond shaped eyes have the same proportions to real penguin chicks. This little penguin has perhaps had a little too much to eat and but his round belly allows it to mimic the realistic waddling movement, which makes him so lovable and cute. Touch him and Pingy will wobble on his base to the delight of everyone. A lovable and engaging addition to any children's room or garden.
Material : rotational-moulded polyethylene
Size: H 70 cm, W 67 cm, Depth 40 cm
The Designer: Eero Aarnio“…. As a young boy I made my first penguin out of paper pulp (papier-mâché) and when it was dry I painted it black and white. For years this 20 cm high penguin lived on top
of the cupboard in my childhood home. Unfortunately my apartment was destroyed in the 40’s during the bombing of Helsinki and the penguin was lost in the mayhem of war. Now thanks to Magis I have again my penguin chick. The shape of the head and the profile with the cute beak have the right proportions and the eyes have the realistic almond shape characteristic to penguin chicks. This little penguin has perhaps had a little too much to eat and therefore has the round belly, but this particular rotund shape allows it to mimic the realistic waddling movement, which makes it so lovable and cute.”
The Brand: Magis was established in 1976 in the north east of Italy, one of Europe’s most dynamic industrial areas. It was founded by Eugenio Perazza, “a businessman who asks clear design questions that already provide a significant part of the answer, particularly when carefully formulated together with a talented designer” (Giampiero Bosoni, Domus 941, November 2010). The company is a prominent lodestar in the design world. Stefano Giovannoni, Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Marc Newson, Ron Arad, Naoto Fukasawa, Marcel Wanders, Philippe Starck, Zaha Hadid and Thomas Heatherwick are just some of the designers that have worked with Magis, creating a vast collection of pieces, each with its own story to tell and its own character to express, be it in domestic settings or collective spaces.
